WHAT IS OSTEOPATHY?
Osteopathy is a manual form of medicine that allows the osteopath to carefully and thoroughly assess, diagnose and treat the patient’s complaint. It also allows the osteopath to develop a maintenance programme for each patient to reduce the risk of recurrence. One of the principles of osteopathy is that the body has the ability to heal itself. However, this self healing mechanism is often upset by physical, psycho-emotional and environmental stresses and stressors. Osteopaths use their highly developed sense of palpation (touch) to apply many different types of treatment. These include:
ARTICULATION
The gentle movement of one joint against another
NEUROMUSCULAR TECHNIQUES
These are designed to reduce the tension and pain within muscles by carefully
decreasing the tension and stress within it.
STRAIN COUNTERSTRAIN TECHNIQUES
This is a particularly effective technique for joints which have painful
of limited range of movement. It involves moving the joint to its position
of maximum ease.
SOFT TISSUE MANIPULATION
Involves the passive stretching of muscle fibres either along or across
their course.
HIGH VELOCITY THRUSTS
Use an extremely small range of movement to release tension at a joint
line. This usually produce the characteristic popping or clicking sounds
traditionally associated with osteopathy.
LYMPHATIC TEHCNIQUES
Very gentle and light handed techniques that help to remove swelling and
congestion in soft tissues.
HARMONIC TECHNIQES
Gentle oscillatory techniques used within pain free ranges of movement
to gently loosen the ranges of movement in painful or restricted joints.
CRANIAL OSTEOPATHY
A gentle yet powerful technique which has had success treating headaches
and sinus problems. It is also effective in treating glue ear and colic
in infants.
